Chapter 4
Wendy?
After repeating everything three dozen times to Asswipe and the Police, I had to once again lock our 'Open 24 Hours' door and call Mrs. Yamamoto. She called Big City Insurance, and they said they would have us as good as new in less than twenty-four hours.
That was their motto. “Super damage? Claims handled super fast, or get a toaster free.” We've never gotten a toaster, and I don't believe anyone ever has. I'm thinking that some sort of powers have to be involved with how fast they clean up after an incident. The Big City Gazette building is already repaired with a shiny new globe on top of the skyscraper again.
Vi had gone home, she had to be up early to get to the comic studio.
So after looking at all the defrosting food in the open freezer, I sighed and headed out the back door for the walk home. As I was locking the door, blue light flickered behind me, and an almost sultry voice behind me said, “Take a girl for coffee?”
My smile was up before I finished turning. Agent Heather Sams was there... out of that professional suit and in painted on jeans hanging low on her hips, and a pullover, looking waaaay out of my league with her crooked smile and sunglasses which currently didn't hide the lightning in her eyes. Was she showing off for me?
Wait. I started to panic. Crap on linguini. Had Photon just asked me on a date?
I just stood there, jaw hanging open as I tried to form a response. I knew it was something simple I was supposed to say, like a one or a zero... no, it was binary but not that basic. Oh! I asked, “Yes?”
She silently chuckled, that must have been the right answer. Oh god, I felt so awkward just then. She said, “Good, I wanted to see if you were ok. I couldn't really ask earlier.”
Oh. I deflated, and she seemed to see that so she rushed out, “And I just wanted to get to know you better.”
Oh.
Blargh! I was getting whiplash here. She looked amused.
Her eyes sparkling a violet now. I gave her an impudent look as I changed my eyes to match her violet. This got an explosive burst of laughter from her as she let her power fade.
She looped an arm in mine and said as she started leading me toward her SUV. “You, Emily Monroe, are a smartass, and I like that.”
Wait, was she only asking me because I looked like... “I suppose that SHE is a smartass too?”
She looked confused for just a second then shook her head. “No, actually quite the opposite.” Then I think she understood why I asked and she shook her head in exasperation, “Anyone who spends more than five minutes with you knows that you two are absolutely nothing alike. Except for that...”
I followed her gaze to my hands, I was rubbing my thumbs against the side of my index finger in a nervous habit.
